As of the census of 2000, there are 2,460 people, 779 households, and 578 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,055.3/km2 (2,732.6/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 6.30% White, 92.07% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 779 households out of which 36.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 22.3% are married couples living together, 44.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% are non-families. 23.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.08 and the average family size is 3.64.
